FAQQ: Do my keys have a chip in them?
A: Transponder chips and variations have been around since 1985 starting with GM to combat car theft, particularly of Corvettes. Ford and Chrysler started using chipped keys by the mid 90s. By 2000 most automotive manufacturers had chipped keys. GM introduces chipped keys in 2007 to all make and models. Kia and Hyundai and the exception.
Q: My keys are locked in the trunk?
A: Most cars have access to the trunk via the back seat. However some cars like Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia that have a trunk button( not a lever release) have a security feature that if the alarm actives the electronics shut down rendering the trunk button useless. A professional locksmith can clear the alarm and get the electronics working again.
Q: A locksmith came out to make a new key and now my original won’t work.
A: In some cases to program a new key, the vehicle will erase all keys. All keys need to be present when programming new keys particularly on GM and Toyota. We can quickly reprogram those keys back into the vehicle.
Q: I need new locks on my house.
A: I strongly discourage using kwikset smartlocks on owned property. The locks were designed to use on rental properties that require frequent repining of locks. Those locks have a short lifespan and if you do get locked out most locksmiths just drill them out. Kwikset and Schlage locks are the most common residential locks in the U.S. Schlage is slightly more secure than Kwikset, but both will keep your home secure.
Q: Why is my key getting stuck in my ignition?
A: Most of the time it’s the key that gets worn down. If the key is also sticky in the door lock chances are getting a new key with fix your problem. If it works great in the door and still sticks in the ignition it could be the wafers in the ignition are worn down or a combination of both. I recommend getting a new key made has soon as the problem occurs to avoid more expense fixes.
Q: What can I do if my lock doesn’t want to turn with the key.
A: If its a residential or commercial lock I recommend cleaning the lock out. DO NOT USE GRAPHITE POWDER! Graphite powder will create a paste. WD-40 works to take out the rust and build up. You’d be surprised how much pocket lent and dirt gets put into locks over time. However WD-40 isn’t a lubricant. I use Houdini lock lube.
